The Green Day Sweater In Red

A Sweater For Sarah Catherine

Pattern: Green Day Cardigan
Designer: Elinor Brown
Yarn: Lamb's Pride Naturespun Superwash Sport
Needles: 3.25 mm and 3.50 mm

There is a delightful family on our street with three dear little boys. When I found out that baby number four was on its way, I asked the rather solemn eldest boy whether he wanted it to be a boy or a girl. "Oh, a boy", he answered, with no hesitation. "But poor Mummy", I said. "Then she would still be the only girl in the house." He gave me a look that expressed a bit of wonder at the condition of my short and long term memory and said pointedly "There IS the dog!"
Well, unfortunately, their lovely female golden retriever passed away several weeks after that conversation but Baby Sarah Catherine arrived a few days ago. And I think she will look swell in this sweater and a little pair of red rubber boots!

Work in Progress - Green Day Cardigan

Designer: Elinor Brown
Yarn: Lambs Pride Superwash Sport
Needles: Circular 3.25 mm and 3.50 mm

I always like Elinor Brown's designs. This little cardigan has been featured  in an issue of Yarn Forward Magazine. Just one more sleeve to complete and it can be pieced together and the neck and button bands added.

Little Turtleneck

Pattern: #252 Bernat Six For Toddlers
Yarn: Dream in Color Classy
Color: Absolute Magenta

I had leftover yarn from Big Sister's TINY Tea Leaves Cardi and couldn't resist making Baby Sister a little turtleneck - using the same pattern I knit for her Daddy many, many years ago.
I'm not happy with the underarm area. I decided to knit the body in the round up to the armholes, then divide for the front and back. Sounds like a plan but introducing a small section of seaming after knitting in the round results in a pinched in area just below the underarms. Next time, I will knit the pieces separately and use a mattress stitch to sew them together.
Hopefully, she will wear it to daycare, look sweet, and play with her arms more at her sides than up in the air. And hopefully her French grandmother, an excellent seamstress, will not examine it too closely.

Celebrating Mrs. Zimmermann

Flipping  this over:

Into This:

Halfway into Elizabeth Zimmermann's famous Baby Surprise Jacket, I decided that the only value in the exercise was experiencing the weird and wonderful construction that Elizabeth devised many years ago, and to marvel at the way her mind worked. Three quarters of the way through, I nearly abandoned it as a mediocre (at best) little garment. Now that it has been completed, turned,  flipped, and smoothed into place with the buttons added, I must say that I understand now why, on Ravelry, knitters frequently comment that they can hardly wait to start another. It is cute.As per the KnitWiki website for the BSJ, I made full length sleeves with K1tbl, P1 ribbing

Pattern: Baby Surprise Jacket
Designer: Elizabeth Zimmermann (Schoolhouse Press)
Yarn: Schachenmayr Nomotta Extra Big Merino
Needles: 5.0 mm for sweater; 4.5 mm. for sleeve ribbing
